The security industry, much like others I imagine, is cyclical with the occasional disruptions. The pace of technological change continues to accelerate as it impacts our lives more and more every day. Every once in a while, something happens that fundamentally changes the way we operate.

Mobile phones and wireless networking are just two examples that have changed how people work and live. Do you remember what life was like before you had the power of the Internet, always on, in your hand? It’s hard to think of what it was like to wait for the evening news or a newspaper to get an update on what’s going on. Today, we are less about buying things and more about having experiences – that closely follows the way we’re thinking about computing.

Now, we’ve entered the transformative era of cloud computing. No matter how you see it, cloud computing has universally impacted the way you work, play and live. Consumption-based computing is the wave that we will ride long into the future. Rapidly fading are the days when companies built monolithic infrastructures to support their IT mission, with pallets of rack-mountable servers, storage, firewalls and everything else. There simply isn’t a desire to build walled castles anymore – and that’s absolutely the right approach if what we’re seeking for security is to enable agility, scale and flexibility.

So it became clear to me that if I wanted to go do something meaningful that would have a broad impact, the cloud would be my destination. After that, it was simply a matter of finding the right fit.

From my perspective, Armor is in the category of rare opportunities – to be part of something truly transformative, that has a global impact, with an intimate feel. There are two big reasons why I believe joining a cloud security-as-a-service organization is the right move.

First, there is the obvious. You’re moving infrastructure, services and applications to the cloud. It only makes sense that your security provider is on that same path. If the type of security controls and products you’re using to protect your cloud assets aren’t cloud-native, you’re going to struggle. While there are a lot of “cloud-ified” solutions out there, the new generation of product and service is being designed in and delivered from the cloud. Second, as I worked with many IT professionals over the past several years, one thing became increasingly clear – security operations is something few security leaders are truly happy with. There are multiple trouble spots including finding, hiring, training and retaining talent; scalability; expertise; and a laundry list of other issues. Then there’s the challenge of evolution. Many security leaders are pivoting their security operation center (SOC) teams away from the legacy, alert-focused model to a modern threat and adversary-centric model, which is creating issues with lack of expertise and scale.

More and more it is both economical and operationally advantageous to get your security delivered as a service. There is a nuance to this, of course, but that’s for a different more in-depth discussion. But trust me on this, security delivered as a service is top of mind in a significant number of budget and strategy discussions, and it’s only going to gain momentum.
