For my inaugural blog post, I wanted to introduce myself. I’m Jeff Schilling, Armor’s chief security officer, which, along with another senior management position, was just announced today.
I’d like to share a story with you, as I’ve had cloud security on my mind for a few years now. I was delivering a speech on cyber security three years ago while still on active duty as a colonel in the Army. Someone asked me, “What do you think will be a game changer for securing our networks?” My answer remains the same today: building cloud environments that can be defended will be our best opportunity to regain the initiative against our cyber foes. To my disappointment, most cloud providers have NOT “changed the game.” I joined this team because I believe the Armor vision is the same one I had three years ago when asked that question. I am grateful for the opportunity to be here and I think my role further highlights Armor’s commitment to being a security company first and putting the right people, processes, and technology in place to help us keep our customers’ applications and data secure.
A little history: I spent 24 years in the U.S. Army where I served as the director of the Global Network Operations and Security Center under the U.S. Army’s Cyber Command – one of the military’s top cyber security groups. I oversaw security operations and incident response for more than 1 million computer systems on 350 wide-area networks supporting U.S. Army units in more than 2,500 locations worldwide. I also served as director of the Department of Defense’s global security operations center with Joint Task Force Global Network Operations, where I managed security operations and incident response for more than 4 million computer systems. I was the global incident manager for some of the biggest cyber security events in DOD history. Post military, I spent time with Dell SecureWorks as the director of the company’s incidence response practice. My team and I supported more than 300 customers with incident response planning, capabilities development, digital forensics investigations and active incident management.
I came to this company because the cloud offers a tremendous opportunity for enterprises to work differently and I believe in Armor’s security methodology, which is steeped in my sweet spot – security operations. This company is rewriting the way that a cloud provider should operate, with its focus squarely on providing security operations centers and security professionals with corporate and military backgrounds – just like me. I am planting the flag here at Armor – this is the cyber terrain I want to defend and make a difference for our customers.
We’re going to do a lot of innovative things and have a great time changing the idea of what a secure cloud can do. First, watch as we continue to add to our security operations center (SOC) with smart, skilled security professionals. No other cloud has a security operations team to back up its infrastructure (and no other cloud has a secure infrastructure like Armor’s). From our people to our knowledge to our processes, Armor is protecting our clients’ data and applications from the inside out. I look forward to staying in touch and sharing more thoughts with you. Feel free to reach out and until then – stay secure.
