#219 Training Rapier

We have developed this rapier for our western martial arts customers who wanted Arms & Armor durability and quality in a weapon for practice and sparring. The use of a single hilt form with a variety of blade options allows for the practitioner to get the right tool their needs.

The steel hilt has a smooth matte finish. The blades come in several varieties (detailed below) and are finished with rounded edges and corners. The blades are designed to reproduce the handling characteristics of sharp historical weapons, but with vastly increased safety and durability and longevity for training and sparring.

"I own two of the Arms & Armor ring-hilted practice swords and I find them to be the best training swords in their price range. In fact, I find that their performance is comparable to more expensive weapons and their comfort, durability, and handling is perfect for 16th century Italian Swordsmanship. As a practitioner and instructor of Historic Italian Fencing, I strongly recommend these swords to anyone who is serious about practicing Bolognese Swordsmanship."

Blade Options for A&A Hilts
The training blade options we can provide are described below. When ordering the Training Rapier be sure to tell us which type of blade you want and the length of blade you need.

Our stock rapiers may be ordered with these blades as well. The price for these would be the same as the rapier bought with a sharp blade.

#6004 Nail Blade Narrow
This is a common period-style practice rapier blade; it starts out with a diamond cross-section and transitions into a rectangular cross section in mid blade with a flexible foible (debole) of this same cross section. This can be made with or with out a nail tip. The design of this blade allows for more give in the thrust than the Side Sword style blade.(Pictured here with the nail tip)

"My absolute favourite rapier for teaching, training and fencing. A lovely sword, perfectly balanced and pretty too!"
—Guy Windsor, founder of The School of European Swordsmanship and author of The Swordsman's Companion and The Duellist's Companion.

You can see Guy Windsor's rapier, a #6004 Nail Blade Narrow on a #170 French Hilt, in action in The Duellist's Companion.

#6005 Nail Blade Wide
This is a period-style practice rapier blade; it starts with a diamond cross-section and transitions into a rectangular cross section in mid blade with a flexible foible (debole) of this same cross section. This can be made with or without a nail tip (see picture). The differing cross-sections of this blade allows for more give in the thrust than the Side Sword style blade. (Pictured here with out the nail tip)

#6006 Rebated Blade Narrow
This blade has the standard diamond cross-section with a rebated edge and a slightly rounded tip. This is a good choice for stage combatants and some re-enactors, as it looks very like a sharp blade.

#6007 Rebated Blade Wide
This blade has the standard diamond cross-section with a rebated edge and a slightly rounded tip. This is a good choice for stage combatants and some re-enactors, as it looks very like a sharp blade.

#6008 Side Sword Blade
This blade design is perfect for practicing styles that emphasize the cut, such as Bolognese swordsmanship. It is modeled on surviving examples of 16th century European training swords. The rectangular cross section is extremely durable, and creates a safer edge geometry.

You can order multiple interchangeable blades to fit the same hilt. (illustrated below with the #162 Milanese Rapier hilt). Additional blades cost 370.00 each. Most blades can be fitted to most hilts, so please let us know what you need.

Pictured above is the #6007 Rebated Blade mounted in the hilt, the #6008 Side Sword Blade and a #6005 Nail Blade. All of these blades were fitted to this hilt and are interchangeable.

Development of A&A Training Rapiers
We have been doing custom training pieces like these for many years. They have been tested in many different styles for combat, training and sparring. This long development process allowed us to create a versatile weapon that meets as many needs in the martial arts community as possible.

These blades have developed from two main sources. The first was a very close look at many of the surviving original training blades. Many thanks to our many friends and colleagues that have given us access to these items, their data and experiences. The second was an extensive period of testing and use by many leading WMA practitioners. The development of several swords to their specific needs and specifications has been most illuminating, giving us insight into the various needs of the community. Our goal is to produce swords that work well, stand up to extensive use, and provide the feel and play of the originals. We are proud to have helped them make these historic styles live again.
