FORGING A TUCK POMMEL

Get it Hot-

We first took a large piece of steel that had the mass to make such a large pommel and brought it to working temperature in our forge.

Shape it-

We placed the heated piece on a shaped stake to keep the form of the pommel facing down as we worked section facing up.

Shaping the concave sides-

The pommel is welded to a handle to maneuver and control it while a while a shaped tool is held to the face being worked by another person.

Hit it hard-

Then a bit of pressure is applied,...

repeatedly.

The Roughed Pommel-

One can see the deep concaves which allow such a massive pommel to be usable.

This Tuck is an exceptionally large example. It certainly illustrates an interesting choice for the medieval knight on the battlefield and if the period fight manuals are any indication a very effective weapon.
